What it means to be a citizen of art

Being a citizen of art means making a choice.

That of inhabiting the world with awareness, meaning and beauty.

It's choosing objects with intention not to fill a void, but to tell a story.

It is respecting the slow and precise gestures, passed down from hand to hand, generation after generation.

It is living in a space that creates a connection: between humans, matter, and place.

It is recognizing the value of manual work, of imperfect detail, of the handmade that resists the disposable.

Being a citizen of art also means reaching out.

It's about defending local economies, independent workshops, and giving young people and invisible hands a chance to access dignified, sustainable, and valued work.

It is believing that craftsmanship and design are powers of aesthetic, social and cultural transformation.

And to relay it to each chosen object, to each inhabited space.

The legacy we carry

A global craft, from the land

From Dakar to Brussels, from Fez to Rotterdam, gestures echo one another. Natural materials, ancient techniques, and know-how passed down from generation to generation form a common language, to which we listen with respect. We draw inspiration from this global weave of heritage, to bring cultures together through objects.

The breath of local practices

Citizen A works hand in hand with artisans from the African continent and the diaspora. Each piece reflects the uses of the land, available resources, and the living memory of traditional gestures. We believe in the power of practices rooted in a place, and in their ability to open up to the world without distorting their naturalness.

Transmission as a common thread

Our belief is that the future is made by many hands. Those of the elders who teach, and those of the young who invent. By supporting intergenerational collaborations and promoting hybrid paths, we contribute to a vibrant creative ecosystem. Designers like Saran Keita , Bibi Seck , and Maelys Ediaho embody this vision, where heritage serves as a springboard, not a relic.

  • The object

Each piece selected in the Citizen A boutique carries a story, a gesture, a vision. It is the fruit of proven expertise and a committed aesthetic. Designed to last, to leave a lasting mark, to inhabit everyday life differently, our collection brings together carefully selected designer objects and contemporary works of art.

Marème FALL

— Founder & Lead Curator

I consider myself a craftsperson of spaces. I have always sought to create places that tell a story; places that heal, connect, and inspire.

With Citizen A, I wanted to build a project that gives meaning to our everyday objects. A project where art, design, and craftsmanship are not only aesthetic, but also carry a mission: to honor gestures, materials, and knowledge. To bring a vision of the world that resists speed, overconsumption, and standardization.

I believe in ethical design, meant to last. I believe that beauty has a purpose. And that in every piece we choose to incorporate into our homes, there is the possibility of a narrative, a dialogue between humanity, place, and memory.

My commitment is also political: I campaign for fairer local economies, for the recognition of manual trades, for objects that repair more than they consume.

Every collaboration with an artist or designer is an act of mutual trust. And every space I design is an invitation to experience life differently.

I am proud to carry this vision forward with Citizen A. And to build, with you, a community of art citizens.

Behind each object, each collaboration, a strong promise:

that of transparent traceability, sincere respect for creators, and fair collaboration. We carefully select sustainable materials, limit waste, and promote decent incomes for all the artisans involved. Our commitment is to create a positive, lasting, and human impact at every stage, so that your purchase is as meaningful as it is beautiful.
